The Origins of Garnet Stone

So, the most notable story in Greek mythology involves Hades and Persephone. The story is of a Greek God named Hades and a goddess named Persephone, the daughter of Zeus. Persephone is abducted by Hades and is taken down to the underworld. Her mother Demeter asked Hades to let her daughter come back to her, but Hades, who was smitten by Persephone, did not allow her to go back. So Demeter requests Zeus, the Greek god of the sky, to help her and set her daughter free, and Zeus abides by the request and makes sure that Persephone remains safe, Zeus sends Hermes, a messenger, and he embarks on a journey to find Persephone. When Hermes arrives, he finds Persephone and takes her with him.

So, Persephone is delighted to find Hermes, and they are just leaving, then Hades is consumed by clever thought, and he gives her a pomegranate. He believes that if she experiences the sweetness of ripe pomegranates, then she will be drawn back to him.

And it happened. Surprisingly, Persephone came each year for 3 months to visit Hades and till then the winter was there. How delighted and starstruck Hades would have been? Since then, the link between fine garnets and pomegranate seeds says that when you gift a garnet as a symbol of love, it's a promise of quick returns or a token of estranged love. Due to this myth, people have believed that the garnet is a stone that is meant to be used as a symbol of love and reuniting in addition to it the garnet and pomegranate all are related to eternity in Greek mythology.

Types of Garnet

Garnets come in a range of colors and minerals and it's just not a single mineral but a group of several closely related minerals. Furthermore, all the different types of garnet have nearly similar qualities but they don't have the same chemical composition and colors. Garnets are formed as a result of high pressure and temperature and are often known as igneous or metamorphic rocks found in limestones and sandstones.

Almandine Garnet
This is the most common garment which you will find, typically in red. It has a hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the MOHS scale. It's quite durable and suitable for jewelry-making purposes. It's usually transparent and allows light to pass through, giving it a glass-like appearance. It comes in ovals, rounds, and emerald cuts. Garnet is found in Sri Lanka, India, Brazil, and the United States. Element Dyeing Garnet signifies vitality, passion, and grounding energy and it inspires a sense of security as well.

Pyrope Garnet
Pyrope is a type of gemstone that gets its red color from magnesium. It's made up of a combination of magnesium, aluminum, and silicate minerals. It looks clear or partly see-through, similar to another gemstone called Almandine. Pyrope is typically found in a type of rock called peridotite, which comes from deep within the Earth's mantle.

Spessartine Garnet
Spessartine is a gemstone known for its vibrant colors, ranging from orange to red, with hints of pink that can vary from a soft peachy tone to a rich reddish-orange hue. Some varieties also come in shades of yellow and brown. These gemstones are quite rare and are typically found in metamorphic rocks and pegmatites. They are mainly discovered in locations like Madagascar, Namibia, and Sri Lanka. When light hits them, they can sparkle brightly, adding to their allure.

Andradite Garnet
Andradite is a diverse gemstone that comes in various types with different compositions and looks. You can find it in shades like brown, vibrant green, deep black, yellow, and even a deep red color. While it's not very shiny or bright, it's quite common and easy to find. Despite its commonality, it's highly sought after. Andradite is believed to promote the assimilation of vital minerals, stimulate blood regeneration, and strengthen the immune system. Emotionally, it's thought to bring stability, balance, and self-confidence, providing inner strength.

Grossular Garnet
When pure, grossulars are colorless and quite rare, but they typically come in various shades of green. It's a calcium aluminum species and has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 with a density of  3.6 g cm−3. They are formed from a combination of oxygen, calcium, silicon, and aluminum. Garnet jewelry, which includes grossular varieties, offers a wide array of colors and aesthetics, making it quite appealing. Grossulars are found in locations such as Canada, Kenya, Russia, and the United States. They exhibit a luster that is both vitreous and resinous, and their density is higher than that of nonmetallic minerals. While they may be challenging to come by, grossulars are considered valuable gemstones worth the investment.

Knorringite Garnet
Knorringite is a type of garnet that contains magnesium and chromium. Unlike other garnets, it doesn't possess the typical aesthetic appeal and is not used in jewelry-making. In fact, it's not considered a gem material at all due to its lack of visual attractiveness.

Garnets are not popular just today. In fact, in the Victorian era, they had their moments. People stumbled upon garnets back then, and they instantly became a jewelry sensation and a fashion statement. Garnets not only make you look pretty, in fact, they can also be used as a thoughtful gift. Especially when a loved one is about to embark on a long journey, then you can give it to them because they shield against negativity.

Tribes across the India-Pakistan region, as well as North America, tossed garnets into wars, eventually turning things up in their favor.

Heal Broken Hearts

They say that healing an injured body is far easier than a broken heart. Why? Probably because emotional wounds are not visible. Feelings like longing, sadness, jealousy, and anger might kill you as the days pass, but they will not show signs of any terrible deed. But garnets are to our rescue, and let's see why.

Garnets are also used to heal broken hearts or relationships that are unhappy. Garnets can treat depression and anxiety by increasing blood circulation and heart rate. And the best part is that you can even gift them to a loved one as a Valentine's Day gift or any other special occasion.

The Chakras Linked to Garnet

Have no idea about chakras? Don’t worry, we’ll explain!

Chakras are believed to be energy centers within the body, according to certain spiritual traditions, particularly those stemming from Hinduism and Buddhism. There are seven main chakras, which are thought to be aligned along the spine, from the base to the crown of the head. Each chakra is associated with specific qualities, functions, and aspects of human experience, including physical, emotional, and spiritual elements.

Now let's discuss what Chakra points garnet crystals can hit:

Solar Plexus Chakra
The gold-orange shades of garnets are used for the sacral or the second chakra which is at the front of the pelvis below the naval. So what is it used for? It's there to control energy flow at the center of gravity. As far as red and black garnets are concerned, they heal the base chakras by fighting off traumas in the body.

Crown Chakra
Almandine garnet is linked to the root as well as the crown and heart chakra. The crown chakra qualities resemble its name as it is one of the highest of the chakras and lightest as well. The crown chakras pull the spirit back to the center and balance all the other chakras.
