What Is Lapis Lazuli?

Lapis lazuli is an ornamental semi-precious stone that is popular for its distinctive blue color. The word “lapis” is Latin for stone, while lazurite is derived from the ancient Persian word “lazhuward” meaning blue. It mostly comprises sulfur-based minerals like blue lazurite, white calcite, and white-gold pyrite. Other minerals may also be present, but these three are most commonly found inside these stones.

Raw lapis lazuli stones were mined for more than 6,000 years from the limestone caves in Northeast Afghanistan and made their way to other civilizations through trade. Throughout history, many cultures have revered these mystical stones for their vivid color and connection to celestial energy. The ancient Egyptians used to adorn their pharaoh burial masks with lapis lazuli jewelry. During the Renaissance period in Europe, these blue stones were finely ground into ultramarine pigment. Many vases and carvings are still adorned with lapis lazuli crystal decorations until today.

Until now, lapis lazuli has been considered one of the most sought-after semi-precious stones because of the healing properties, spiritual influence, and metaphysical symbolism it provides.

Lapis Lazuli Color

When you see the lapis lazuli stone, it will typically be a dep blue in color. The blue can be either light to dark, though the darker shadings are often more valuable. The blue color forms when the lazurite mineral mixes with some of the other minerals to form the rock. The lazurite is the blue, so the more of that mineral that gets into the stone, the darker the blue shading of the lapis lazuli stone is.

It is a beautiful stone that can be either a solid blue or will come with veins of white or gold pyrite, which is the same as fool’s gold. It may not have any real gold in it, but this does not take away from the beauty and mystical powers that you can enjoy. The blue lapis lazuli has been prized for years as a great piece to add to jewelry.

Where Is Lapis Lazuli Found?

The lapis lazuli mineral can be found in a few different areas of the world. Where you find it may determine the exact coloring and inclusions that you will get with the stone, but it is still beautiful no matter where it comes from.

This stone is found mainly in Afghanistan, specifically in the Sar-e-Sang district of Badakhshan province. If you would like to get some of the highest quality lapis lazuli, then this is the region you should focus your search on. However, there are other locations where this stone has been found over the years including Angola, Russia, Chile, and Pakistan.

How Is Lapis Lazuli Formed?

This stone is going to form from either marble or limestone that will have lazurite in it (lazurite is the blue component in the stone), along with a few other minerals like calcite, pyrite, and even diopside or sodalite on occasion. The original marble or limestone is going to go through a change under high temperature and pressure conditions within the crust of the Earth. This will help to change the texture and mineral composition of the rock. This is where other minerals can also get mixed together into the rock and can give it the unique look in the end.

Over time, this rock will form into the lapis lazuli. The bright blue color that the stone is prized for is due to the lazurite mineral, though the pyrite will help bring in some of the famous golden fleck and calcite will add in some unique white veins that will make this one pop out more than before.

Corresponding Chakras

"Chakra" is a Sanskrit term meaning "disk" or "wheel" and refers to the energy centers within the body. These spinning wheels of energy correspond to specific nerve bundles and major organs. For optimal functioning, your chakras need to remain open and balanced. When they become blocked, you may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra. There are seven primary chakras aligned along the spine, beginning from the crown of the head and descending to the base or root of the spine. Along the way, the energy passes through the chakras of the third eye, throat, heart, solar plexus, and sacrum.

The lapis lazuli crystal is associated with both the throat chakra (Vishuddha) and the third eye chakra (Ajna). The throat chakra serves as the locus for expressing heartfelt truths and influences how individuals communicate with the world. Meanwhile, the third eye represents our gateway to inner wisdom and intuition. The energies of both chakras are linked to the color blue similar to lapis lazuli properties. Keeping one of these mystical stones close balances the throat and third-eye chakras and avoids blockages in one’s insight and communication.

Zodiac Signs

Lapis lazuli is a gemstone that synergizes well with the zodiac signs of Sagittarius, Taurus, Virgo and Libra to express themselves in a mature, sensitive and tactful manner.

Leo: People born under the Leo zodiac sign are confident and ambitious in nature. Lapis lazuli emits a strong and vibrant energy that resonates well with the personality of Leo.

Gemini: Gemini people have a natural gift for articulating their ideas and thoughts. This gift can be further enhanced by lapus lazuli’s connection with the throat chakra, the energy center responsible for self-expression, creativity, and communication.

Virgo: Those who are born under the sign of Virgo are known for their intellectual and analytical prowess. However, they can also tend to be too shy and modest and that might hinder their confidence. Lapis lazuli encourages introspection, self-awareness, and clarity of thought. This stone can help Virgos connect deeper with their emotions to overcome their timidity during times of communication and self-expression.

Taurus: The Taurus star sign is fixed, and it reflects on the loyal, meticulous, and consistent personality of those who are born under this zodiac. However, Taurus may also come off to others as stubborn due to their insistence on keeping to their routines. Their stubborn tendencies can be balanced by the lapis lazuli benefits of enriching one’s self-awareness and communication skills.

Libra: Libras are great at socializing but they have a tendency to please everyone and avoid conflict that may lead to neglecting their own needs. These people are also more likely to be indecisive since they are conscious of making choices that could offend other people. Lapis lazuli metaphysical properties enhance self-awareness and decision-making, making it a perfect choice for Libras who need to relieve stress and refocus on their well-being.

Sagittarius: Sagittarians have an ambitious, adventurous, and fun-loving personality. The connection between Lapis Lazuli and the throat chakra can benefit Sagittarians by enhancing their self-awareness and communication to avoid negative relationships with others.

Lapis Lazuli Birthstone

While lapis lazuli is a beautiful stone, it is not considered a modern birthstone. You can choose to use it as an alternative to your traditional birthstone, but it is not recognized. Sodalite Vs. Lapis Lazuli

In many cases, the sodalite stone and lapis lazuli can be confused and mixed up. This is often due to the fact that they are both blue in color, often with similar shadings of blue, and they can both of inclusions in them. Without a lot of experience with gemstones, it can be easy to mix the two up, especially if you can’t put them side by side to compare.

There are several similarities and differences between sodalite and lapis lazuli that will help you tell the difference. We can look at a few of them including:

Appearance: Lapis lazuli is going to be dark blue in color with some flecks or veins of gold or white. The color blue will often be opaque when you look at it. Sodalite looks very similar with the blue color and some of the inclusions, but the sodalite is often more homogenous than the lapis lazuli.

Composition: Sodalite is going to be a tectosilicate mineral that is composed of several things like chlorine, oxygen, silicon, aluminum, and sodium. It is one of the minerals that is combined to help make lapis lazuli when formed.

Metaphysical properties: Lapis lazuli is good for spiritual awareness, communication, truth, and wisdom. Sodalite is going to be for rational thinking, inner peace, and logic.

Both of these are going to be used for pigments in painting, decorative objects, and jewelry. They are hard to tell apart until you put two of them close together.

How To Tell If Lapis Lazuli Is Real?

When looking into some of the properties of the natural lapis lazuli, you want to make sure that you are getting the real thing. Real lapis lazuli will provide you with the strength that you need and all the benefits we have talked about so far, while fake lapis lazuli is not much more than costume jewelry. Some of the things to consider when looking to see if you have real lapis lazuli includes:

Color and appearance: Raw lapis lazuli is going to have a deep blue color that has some white calcite or veins of fool’s gold inside of it. If you notice that the color is too uniform or there is no calcite or pyrite in it, then you have a fake on your hands.

Hardness: On the Mohs scale, lapis lazuli will have a hardness around 5.5. This means it is softer than some materials like quartz, but harder than others like gypsum. If you test it with a copper coin or your fingernail, real lapis lazuli will not scratch.

Density and weight: Fake lapis lazuli is going to be light. If it seems like it is lighter than it appears, then you have a fake stone.

Heating test: Heating up a bit of the stone with a match or lighter can help here. If you notice the scent of sulfur when you do this, then you probably have real lapis lazuli.

UV light test: You can take natural lapis lazuli and put it under a UV light. If it has a bit of glow to it, then you have the real thing.

How To Cleanse Lapis Lazuli?

If you are able to, consider doing this under a river or a stream, because you can clean off the gemstone while also recharging it at the same time. If not, using some cold water at home for a few minutes and letting it dry naturally with the sun is the best option.

How To Charge Lapis Lazuli

There are several ways that you will be able to recharge your stone. Over time, it can take on a lot of negative energy and its power will start to fade. You need to recharge it to make sure that you can keep it strong. Some of the options to consider include:

Water cleansing: Rinse the gemstone under some running water, a stream or river is best, and visualize the negative energies being washed away.

Saltwater bath: You can submerge the stone in some saltwater for a few hours. Rinse it under some running water when done to remove the salt.

Smudging: Use some sacred herbs like cedar or sage and allow the smoke to clear away the negative energy around your stone.

Sunlight or moonlight: Moonlight is often safer for the stone so that you do not get color fading. But a few hours in both will help to cleanse the stone and make sure that it lasts a long time.
